State Library

The State Library was created by a General Assembly resolution in 1852 as part of the office of the Secretary of State.  The Library's purpose is to assist members of the General Assembly with research on the preparation of proposed legislation.


The Library has over 150,000 volumes in its collection including official documents of the State of Rhode Island and Federal Documents from the Federal Depository Library program.

The Library is open to the public, Monday - Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 and when the General Assembly is in session.  The library is located on the second floor of the Rhode Island State House on Smith Street in Providence.
