Elections & Civics Division


  • Promotes voter registration and turnout
  • Prepares all official and mail ballots for all federal, state and municipal elections held in Rhode Island pursuant to Title 17 of the Rhode Island General Laws.
  • Prepares sample ballots for these elections.
  • Offers Braille and tactile ballots for voters who visually impaired.
  • Qualifies and certifies the names of all federal and state candidates for ballot placement.
  • Conducts lotteries to determine the ballot placement of political parties and certain federal and state candidates.
  • Maintains the state's central voter registration system (CVRS) in compliance with the Help America Vote Act of 2002. This is a real-time database where all 39 cities and towns maintain all voter registration and voting history information. The CVRS also maintains all relevant data regarding street files, voting districts and polling places. Mail ballot applications are also processed and tracked through the CVRS. The CVRS also has a candidate management module where all candidate declarations and related filings are entered and updated through each step of the electoral process.
  • Publishes guides and handbooks that provide crucial dates in the election cycle, explain how to run for office and explain how to register and vote, as well as include explanations of state referenda questions.
