Felons Now Have New Voting Rights
Because of a change in state law, anyone who has been released from prison after serving time for a felony conviction may now be eligible to vote, even if they are still on probation or parole.
In November 2006, Rhode Island voters approved an amendment to the state Constitution. The Restoration of Voting Rights Act of 2006 permits felons to vote once they have left prison.
In order to register to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, resident of Rhode Island, at least 18 years of age by Election Day and have a valid social security number or Rhode Island driver's license. Registering to vote is free.
You can register to vote by filling out a voter registration form and mailing it to the Board of Canvassers in the city or town where you live.
If you have any questions or want help filling out the form, contact the Rhode Island Family Life Center at 781-5808, x111, the state Board of Elections at 222-2345 or the Board of Canvassers in the city or town where you live.
If you were released from prison after November 6, 2006, you can also get help filling out the voter registration form by calling the state Department of Corrections at 462-0880.
